FL Florida Keys 2020 Solar Co-op
System size: 12.3 kW
Why did you decide to go solar?
Our family chose solar energy for our home because it just made sense and was the ecologically correct choice as we attempt to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing environment.
What was the process like for you?
Solar United Neighbors visited our community to explain their co-op process and seek members. They presented a very informative presentation via Zoom and answered many, many questions. The presentation answered most of my questions, and equally important was their partnership with the League of Women Voters, with whom SUN as worked for many years at multiple locations around the US. That relationship lent credibility and trust in SUN, and the co-op process in general. The significant federal tax credits were very helpful and crucial in our decision-making, too.
We joined the co-op, and after research and information gathering, signed on to have solar panels installed on our home.
The process was seamless. The co-op contractor handled everything, their work was impeccable and the entire operation flawless. One stop shopping for the entire process.
Have any of your habits changed since going solar?
We are much more aware of energy usage and delighted with our much reduced electric bills. Following an electric rate increase, we had friends and neighbors asking when they could join a co-op. Fortunately, SUN is now back in our community taking applications for a new co-op.
Have you seen electricity savings since going solar? If so, what have you been able to do with that savings?
Spend it!! We no longer worry about power outages from storms when we are traveling away from home. Everything works flawlessly, and we encourage our neighbors to plug into our exterior electrical outlets when we are away if the power is out.
Have you been involved in any solar advocacy since becoming a solar owner?
I have spoken to a meeting of local citizens to describe our experience and encourage others to go solar.
What advice would you give to someone considering going solar?
Just do it! Prices for solar energy installation are coming down significantly. If you think about the cost, for most average homes the price is about the same as new car in most instances. Check it out.
