Gov. Spanberger partners with the Switch Together program in Virginia
- Solar accessibility,
- Solar affordability
The Governor of Virginia has spoken: More Virginians need access to life-changing solar savings.
In a groundbreaking new partnership, Governor Abigail Spanberger has partnered with Solar United Neighbors (SUN) to bring Switch Together — our solar bulk-purchasing program — to more Virginia families and small businesses than ever before.
With the Governor’s recent announcement of our program, Virginians across the Commonwealth will unlock its benefits, including saving an average of 23 percent on home and business solar installations — equivalent to $6,300 on a typical system, which is estimated to save the average household approximately $2,200 a year on electricity costs.
Affordable energy: a top priority for Virginia families
Cost of living is a major concern for Virginia families, according to a recent study, and electricity rates are rising even faster than inflation. The burden of paying more for energy falls hardest on middle and low-income households, who often pay a larger percentage of their income on energy than high-income households.
Governor Spanberger is focused on making energy more affordable and reliable for families across the Commonwealth. Supporting Switch Together is part of a collection of actions the Governor is taking to improve energy affordability in her state.
“Virginia families have already seen thousands of dollars in savings from Switch Together, and now, we are empowering more Virginians with the chance to access those same savings,” Governor Spanberger said. “By using the power of the free market, leveraging the Commonwealth’s buying power, and cutting out middlemen, we are creating significant discounts for families and businesses.”
Why go solar with Switch Together?
Going solar is an excellent investment, but it can be overwhelming to navigate the process alone. “[Going solar by yourself] you can get a dozen quotes, and then you’re following up and tracking and trying to consolidate,” said Brian Levy, who went solar with Switch Together last year. “Switch Together is a one-stop shop with a pre-vetted contractor, plus savings, which made it an easy decision.”
Switch Together is a tried-and-true program that delivers a smooth, hassle-free experience going solar. Switch Together harnesses the power of group buying to secure discounts on installations for participants with pre-vetted installers, making it a smart option for families who want to save money without sacrificing reliability.
Larry, from Northern Virginia, went solar with Switch Together and said: “I found the Switch Together program to be very easy. My power bill has gone to zero and I’m going to make money on solar this year.”
SUN has partnered with Switch Together to run bulk-purchasing programs in Northern Virginia since 2023. We offer free Solar 101 information sessions and unbiased support so you can make your solar decision with confidence. To date, we’ve helped 390 families unlock solar savings in the DMV region, installing more than 3 MW of combined solar capacity.
Now, in partnership with the Governor, Switch Together has been made available to 85% of the Commonwealth, with hopes of reaching the whole state by next year. Brandon Praileau, SUN’s Virginia program director, said: “We’re excited to be working with Gov. Spanberger to help bring access to lower-cost solar to more families across the Commonwealth and help Virginians save money.”
