Why did you decide to go solar?

When we purchased our house, my husband and I knew we wanted to go solar from the get-go. As a clean energy advocate, the choice was simple. We did have concerns about tree cover and cost, but it’s amazing how much energy a small area of roof can produce. We only have the base rate cost most months, meaning we are producing all of our own energy for most of the year. When we over produce, that energy carries into other months. Although base rate has increased significantly over the past 5 years (thank you, utility lobby!), our bill is still only around $35. We still fight for community solar and having our utilities transition off of fossil fuels, because we know that renters, multi-family units and properties with significant tree cover aren’t able to reap these benefits. Solar should be available to all, regardless of your living or financial situation. Viva the Sunshine State!

What was the process like for you? Did anything surprise you, or were there challenges you had to overcome?

The permitting process was laborious, and the solar company was not responsive to the county people in a timely manner. Also, we did get involved in one of those more predatory long term loan schemes, but we are still saving money regardless by not being reliant on volatile fuel costs.

Have any of your habits changed since going solar?

We switched to a tankless heater and got a new HVAC system, but those were in the plans anyway.

Have you seen electricity savings since going solar? If so, what have you been able to do with that savings?

Yes to savings. We’ve put it into savings and have been able to have enough savings to stop using credit cards.

What advice would you give to someone considering going solar?
