Last year, Ann Randall of South Euclid, Ohio, achieved a longtime goal by installing two 6.4-kilowatt (kW) solar arrays on her home and rental property with support from the Solar United Neighbors Cuyahoga County Solar Co-op.

“I remember when we literally thought this was science fiction—that you could put panels on your roof and create electricity,” Ann said. “So I was just excited when the opportunity presented itself to make it real.”

Through the Co-op, Ann received a discount on her system and was connected with a vetted, local installer selected by the group. “We were really, really pleased with the contractors that they chose. [We] felt like we got a real good price and they were great to work with.”

In addition to the co-op savings, Ann will further reduce costs through tax incentives available to solar homeowners. For her residence, she will claim the 30% solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) over several years to secure the maximum benefit. While the rental property’s array isn’t directly eligible for tax credits, she can still lower her taxable income by depreciating the system. The panels will reduce the energy expenses of each home by around $1,000 annually.

What once felt far-fetched, is now a tangible renewable energy investment that will reduce Ann’s reliance on utility electric power and save her money for years to come. “I’ve looked forward to [this] my whole adult life, and here we are, and it’s a real thing,” she reflected.
