What makes this co-op special?
Welcome to SUN! The Pikes Peak Solar Co-op is open to anyone in El Paso County, Colorado. We are excited to work in this area for the first time since 2021 and are happy to announce that this co-op is available to both Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU) and Mountain View Electric Association (MVEA) customers.
There’s been a lot of talk about rooftop solar in Colorado Springs lately, and we want to be honest about what’s happening and why we’re running this co-op.
Colorado Springs City Council recently voted to end net metering, the crediting system that helps solar pay itself off. We take this change seriously. Anyone who goes solar after the April 1, 2027 effective date will never see a return on their investment.
However, part of the decision included a 5 year legacy period for customers who install solar before April 1, 2027. This means you will have 5 years on the current rates before having to pick your new option. In response to the legacy period, SUN modeled a few scenarios and found that anyone who goes solar before April 1 could see a reasonable ROI. Join us at a Solar 101 to learn more about what that means.
Seeing that we have until April 1, 2027 to help as many people go solar as possible, launching this co-op felt like the right decision. As always, our program is free to join. Our goal is to help you and your household make the decision that’s best for you. If that means you go solar with us, great. If it means you just join to hang out, that’s perfect. Thanks for joining the co-op and we look forward to being in touch!
What’s a co-op
Imagine walking into a solar company’s office with 50 or 100 of your neighbors and saying, “We all want to get solar. What kind of deal can you give us?”
That’s a solar co-op!
In fact, it’s even better than that. In addition to competitive pricing on solar panels, you get:
- Info to help you understand solar. Our vendor-neutral solar experts are here to help you understand how solar works and make the best decision for your energy needs.
- A direct line to ask specific questions. You can call or email us anytime you need help. We’ll be here now and long after you install solar.
- A team that solicits and reviews proposals from solar companies. First, Solar United Neighbors requests bids on your behalf. Then, a committee of your fellow co-op members meet to assess the pros and cons and select the best installer for the group. (Note: If that sounds interesting to you, you’re also welcome to join the selection committee!)
- Community. You’ll join the growing solar movement. You’ll have a built-in network of support and inspiration from others who, like you, are taking a stand for energy freedom and advancing the clean energy economy.
- A bigger impact! Going solar creates jobs, and puts energy production and its benefits back in the hands of the people and contributes to cleaner air and water for everyone. A solar co-op amplifies those outcomes exponentially.
