Solar United Neighbors recently sat down with Patty in State College, PA, who went solar through the Centre County 2024 Solar Co-op. Read on to learn more about Patty’s experience.

This solar story is transcribed from a live interview

Why did you want to go solar in the first place?

I started looking into it a couple of years ago because of all the climate issues happening. Going green is way more than just reusable grocery bags or driving an EV. There’s so much more to it. Solar seemed to fit into the big picture of going green. And as I learned more, the more I wanted to go solar.

Going solar was a great experience. I found the process of understanding all the pieces of solar fascinating: where the solar panels are made, what the inverter does, how does the battery store the energy, do I own the energy?

Was the co-op helpful in your journey to go solar?

SUN held a solar tour in Centre County that I went to. I talked to some of the people there, and being able to work with a local installer became a priority for me. I was so grateful to be able to take advantage of the solar tour.

The co-op made me feel confident with the choice to go solar. I didn’t know what I didn’t know. Being able to hear from others going solar – and benefiting from the collective knowledge of SUN and the other co-op members – was so helpful.

I so appreciate the consumer protections afforded by the co-op, especially considering we are living in an environment where consumer protections are being stripped away daily.

What advice would you give others considering going solar?

People do approach me about my solar. I recommend the solar tours and reaching out to SUN with frequently asked questions. People should consider going through the co-op to see what kind of pricing they can get.
