How the election could impact your solar investment
- Energy democracy & policy
Solar United Neighbors helps people go solar every step of the way. Since the election, we’ve fielded many questions about what to expect in regards to the laws that help people go solar.
While we don’t yet know all the answers, we do want to walk you through some guidance that is based on where you are in the solar process.
If you’re concerned about the repeal of solar tax credits and other pro-solar policies, sign this petition to urge Congress to keep supporting solar energy.
If you are installing solar in 2024
Installing solar before 2024 ends is the surest way to guarantee that you’ll be able to benefit from the 30% tax credit that is available to solar owners.
If you have a contract and are already going solar, make sure you are in close contact with your installer about when your system will be completed. A system must be “placed in service” to be eligible for the tax credit.
If you plan on installing solar after 2024
If you’re thinking about going solar, it is very unlikely you will have your system completed by the end of the year. Installations typically take several months to reach completion due to a variety of factors.
Be very cautious with claims that someone will get your system installed before the end of 2024 if you aren’t already under contract and working with an installer. And as always, when thinking about solar (or any big home improvement decision), get multiple quotes and do your homework. Our Solar Help Desk can help.
While solar has overwhelming bipartisan support, it is possible that the new Congress could vote to repeal the solar tax credit. This may mean that systems installed next year and beyond would not be eligible for the credit. That’s why we’re gathering solar supporters together to tell Congress to keep these credits in place. Join us by signing the petition.
If you have applied for a grant through the Rural Energy for America Program
The Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) provides grants and loans to farms and rural small businesses to help them make energy improvements like solar. REAP receives funding through the federal Farm Bill. Congress plans to vote on a new version of the bill next year. We’ll provide you updates and opportunities to contact your Congress Members about the bill when we have a better sense of what is in it.
What’s next
We anticipate an attempt to repeal pro-solar policies next year. We’re ready for it. We’ll help you fight back and understand what it could mean for your solar investment. In the meantime, you can start protecting your solar rights today by signing the petition.
