Why did you decide to go solar?

Although I am concerned about climate change and efforts by the petrochemical companies to corrupt our government and political discourse, simple economics also came into play as I approached retirement age. I could have invested $27,000 in the stock market with no guarantee of an ROI above a couple % points, or I could invest in a rooftop solar system which eliminates a home power bill between $150 and $250 per month for the next 20 years. Such an ROI is guaranteed and significantly more than most corporate stocks over the same period. Combine this with the ability to charge my EV at home, and the ROI is even higher…and guaranteed.

What was the process like for you? Did anything surprise you, or were there challenges you had to overcome?

I needed to replace my roof anyway, so no issues other than waiting on roofers to finish.

Have any of your habits changed since going solar?

I already owned a Tesla and installed solar water heating years ago and have since purchased ebikes for recreation. I purchased a 16 SEER AC unit in 2007, and will upgrade to a more modern heat pump when the AC unit needs replacement.

Have you seen electricity savings since going solar? If so, what have you been able to do with that savings?

Yes. I use the savings for other things like supporting local businesses.

Have you been involved in any solar advocacy since becoming a solar owner?

Yes. I’m a City Commissioner and have promoted solar for public and private development.

What advice would you give to someone considering going solar?

Have your roof analyzed by a competent installer. Not all roofs are good candidates for solar.
