Why did you decide to go solar?

Higher electric bills and retiring to a fixed income was a way to eliminate an expense. Regular power outages due to medium storms. Owning an EV it’s a way for independence. Wanting to help climate change with a net zero carbon footprint.

What was the process like for you? Did anything surprise you, or were there challenges you had to overcome?

Replacing hot water heater with an efficient heat pump unit and variable pool pump were helpful in reducing power usage along with high efficiency ac. Heat pump dryer. Better insulation, windows and awnings. Being able to monitor power consumption totals and individual appliances creates a better awareness. Process meant creating space and being patient for permit approvals and inspections.

Have any of your habits changed since going solar? (For example: driving an electric car or bike, switching to an electric stove or water heater, etc.)

Switched to an EV prior and was inspiration. Mentioned changing to high efficiency appliances that allow can show consumption. Playing with the variable pool pump to minimize use. Program water heater to minimize consumption. Ability to gauge how much energy is used or needed.

Have you seen electricity savings since going solar? If so, what have you been able to do with that savings?

Electric bill has gone to the minimum FPL charges for service. We’re storm the grid but probably have a surplus. If legislation was different could be making money but happy to eliminate a $400 monthly bill.

What advice would you give to someone considering going solar?

Go as big as you can. Add batteries. Reduce waste or increase efficiency. Be patient with permits and inspections.
